This island produces 1200 tons of household plastic waste every day. On this sand beach alone, about 100 tons of household waste gathers. Most of it is plastic.

この島から出るごみは、毎日1200トン。そのうち、この砂浜だけでも毎日およそ100トンものごみが集まる。そのほとんどがプラスチックなのだ。

Some plastic sinks or some floats. For example, a plastic bottle with full of water will sink, but the bottle cap will not. The plastic waste washed on the beach is basically plastic that floats on the water.

貝殻の代わりにワインボトルのキャップを背負った、沖縄のヤドカリ。世界中の海で、プラスチックを背負ったヤドカリが見つかっている。
プラスチックには、海中の菌や汚染物質がついていることがとても多い。

釣り糸であるプラスチック製のテグスが海底にたくさん捨てられている。

オーストラリアの海に捨てられた漁網にからまってしまったオットセイ。ちぎれた網が体に深くくいこんでいる。
世界中の海で、漁網にからまって死んでしまうオットセイやアシカ、アザラシがたくさんいる。

Adelie penguins marching on the Antarctic icefield. What are waiting for before them are huge amount of waste with plastic material and other waste dumped in the penguin breeding ground. Some penguins pick up the plastic waste every time when they pass.

海から南極大陸に上陸してきたアデリーペンギンたち。待ちうけるのは、繁殖地に大量に捨てられたプラスチックなどのごみ山だ。通るたびそのプラスチックごみをついばむペンギンもいる。50年ほど前に捨てられたプラスチックは、ここでは姿形をかえずにそのまま残っている。

This Gentoo penguin that inhabits in Antarctica has lost its plastic ring without taking out at the dumping ground. This will make it impossible for the penguin with the ring to catch fish in the sea.

南極にくらすこのジェンツーペンギンは、ごみ捨て場でプラスチックの輪をくわえて、取れなくなってしまった。これでは海にもぐっても、魚をつかまえることができなくなってしまう。
