冬が始まった南極で熱波が起こり、氷河から突如、滝が現れた！

White nights have left the Antarctic continent, and the seas have begun to freeze, signalling the end of summer. The Adelie penguins have finished breeding and have already left Antarctica. Only a few Gentoo penguins remain in Antarctica for moulting. A heat wave suddenly hits Antarctica, the temperature rising by more than 10 degrees during the sub-zero daytime, and the ice beings to melt and water gushes out of glaciers creating a huge waterfall.

南極大陸から白夜が去り、夏の終わりを告げるかのように海が凍り始めた。アデリーペンギンたちは繁殖を終え、すでに南極を去ってしまった。わずかにジェンツーペンギンたちが換羽のために南極に残っているだけだ。そんなとき突然南極に熱波が到来し、氷点下だった日中が10度以上も気温が上昇し、氷として眠っていた水が一気に融けだし、巨大な滝として氷河の内部から噴き出してきた。

Global warming melts permafrost, causing the soil to store large amounts of water. Cracks began to form in the areas brittle due to the pressure of water and has caused the permafrost to collapse.

Antarctic krill grows on phytoplankton that grows under sea ice. Seabirds, whales and penguins come to Antarctica during October to November in search of the Antarctic krill. Antarctic krill is an important food source for the animals that gather in Antarctica. In recent decades, the number of sea ice has decreased due to global warming, and the number of krill has dropped sharply. That means extinction of whales and penguins.

海氷の下で成長する植物プランクトンをエサにして育つナンキョクオキアミ。そのナンキョクオキアミを求めて、10～11月、クジラやペンギンなどの海鳥が南極へやってきます。南極に集まる動物たちを支えていたナンキョクオキアミですが、ここ数十年、温暖化によって海氷がある期間が短くなってしまったために、数が激減してしまいました。それはクジラやペンギンなどの絶滅を意味しています。

The most important food for polar bears is seals. They aim for seals that are giving birth or raising young on the ice. However, global warming has caused the ice to melt and driving the seals away. In the summer when the ice melts, polar bears can't eat seals for more than four months. Polar bears live by eating seals in the winter and exchange the fat into energy source during slow hunting periods. In recent years there are increasing numbers of polar bears that are unable to find food sources and starve to death.

シロクマにとって最も大事な食料は、アザラシです。氷の上で出産と子育てをするアザラシを狙うのですが、温暖化で北極の氷が早く溶けてしまうと、アザラシたちはいなくなってしまいます。氷が融けた夏には4カ月以上もアザラシを食べることができません。シロクマは冬にアザラシを食べて蓄えた脂肪を少しずつ栄養にかえて生きているのですが、今ではエサにありつけず、やせ衰えてしまうシロクマが増えています。

Hundreds of thousands of seals come to St. Lawrence Bay in eastern Canada each year for childbirth. They do everything from giving birth to raising children on drift ice, but there is a rising problem caused by global warming.
Drift ice that once filled the bay has been drastically reduced. It is a matter of life and death for harp seals raising young on drift ice. There are many accidents where babies who have not yet learned to swim drown in the sea.

カナダ東部のセントローレンス湾には、毎年出産のために数十万頭のタテゴトアザラシがやってきます。流氷の上で出産から子育てまでを行うのですが、ここにも温暖化による問題が・・・
かつて湾を埋め尽くすほどあった流氷が激減しているのです。流氷の上で子育てするタテゴトアザラシにとって死活問題です。まだ泳ぎを覚えていない赤ちゃんが海で溺れて死んでしまう事故が、たくさん起きているのです。

If the temperature of seawater rises abnormally, the zooxanthellae that live together in the coral will come out of the coral, causing a “Coral Bleaching” in which the coral becomes pure white. The bleached coral will die if the zooxanthellae do not return.

In March 2016, it was reported that the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest coral reef, extending more than 2,000 km north to south in north-eastern Australia, was experiencing massive coral bleaching. This is an unprecedented scale, with coral bleaching in about 95% of coral in the northern 1000 km area.

海水の温度が異常に上がると、サンゴの体内に共生している褐虫藻がサンゴがら出て行ってしまい、サンゴが真っ白になってまう「白化現象」がおきます。白化したサンゴは褐虫藻が戻らないかぎり、そのまま死んでしまいます。
2016年3月、オーストラリア北東部、南北2000km以上にわたって広がる世界最大のサンゴ礁、グレート・バリア・リーフでも大規模なっサンゴの白化現象が起きていると報道されました。北部1000km圏内の約95％でサンゴが白化しているという、過去にない規模です。

In recent years, typhoons coming to Japan have become huge due to the effects of global warming. Similarly, the El Nino phenomenon that occurs in South America is becoming huge. El Niño, which would normally last only several months now across a whole year has increased the sea water temperature between the coast of Peru and the Galapagos Islands by more than 10 degrees. If the temperature of the seawater continues to rise, seaweed, an important food source for marine iguanas will disappear. In addition, the small fish that feed the Galapagos sea lions and seals are also disappearing, leaving the seals to starve to death.

近年、日本にやってくる台風が地球温暖化の影響で、巨大化しています。それと同じように、南米で発生するエルニーニョ現象にも巨大化がおきています。例年であれば数カ月でおさまるエルニーニョのはずが、ペルー沖からガラパゴス諸島までの海水温度を10度以上も上昇させたり、1年にわたって現象が続いたりしているのです。海水の温度が上昇して長い間続いてしまうと、ウミイグアナの重要なエサである海藻が消えてしまいます。さらに、ガラパゴスアシカやアオットセイのエサである小魚たちのいなくなり、やせ衰えて死をむかえているのです。

Atacama Desert, the driest land on earth. It is said that there is a place where not even a drop of rain has fallen for over 400 years. Miracles occur in such desert once a year. The mist of water from the sea awakens the seeds of the plants that were sleeping in the sand. In an instant, a pink flower field appears. In recent years, due to the effects of global warming, the desert has been heavily rained, and flowers have been blooming in places where plants usually do not grow. On the other hand, the damage caused by floods is increasing due to the heavy rainfall.

地球上でもっとも乾いた大地、アタカマ砂漠。ここでは400年もの間、一滴の雨も降らないところもあるといわれています。そんな砂漠に一年に一度奇跡がおきます。海から発生した霧の水分で、砂に眠っていた植物の種が目覚めます。あっという間にあたり一面ピンクのお花畑に。ここ数年、地球温暖化の影響で、砂漠にまとまった雨が降り、これまで植物が生えてこなかった場所にも花が咲いています。一方で、まとまった雨の影響で、洪水による被害も多くなっているのです。

The world's largest and strongest lizard, the Komodo dragon. The tongue senses the scent of distant prey and puts the Komodo dragon at the top of the island's food chain. However, the Komodo dragon is designated as an endangered species. The cause of the decline is due to deforestation and global warming.

世界最大で最強のトカゲ、コモドドラゴン。舌で遠く離れた獲物のにおいを感知しておそい、島の食物連鎖の頂点にたっているのですが、コモドドラゴンは絶滅危惧種に指定されているのです。生息数が減っている原因は、森の破壊と地球温暖化にあります。

Koala’s habitat is a forest that extends from east to south in Australia. Due to the effects of global warming, the plants have become very dry and large-scale forest fires are occurring. The fires in 2019 were particularly damaging, with tens of thousands of koalas dying.

オーストラリアの東から南にかけて広がる森。コアラの生息地です。温暖化の影響で植物が乾燥し、大規模な山火事が起きています。2019年の火災は特に被害が大きく、何万匹ものコアラが逃げ遅れて犠牲になっているのです。
