One after another, the forests of the orangutans have been cut down and
replaced by oil palm plantations. It is said that between 1935 and 1980,
70-80% of forest habitat has been lost.

Verreaux’s Shifaka is a monkey that lives deep in the forest and seeks
its favourite fruit depending on the season. It had travelled 10km within
the forrest looking for its favourite fruit. However, the majority of the
Shifaka’s forest has been destroyed by humans. The Shifaka is forced to
run on ground to move to the next forest. Originally the hind legs of the
Shifaka had evolved to grab trees in the forest so it is not suited for
running on the ground. The Shifaka will use its hind legs to move around
by jumping but it becomes very tired after 2 to 10 steps.
ベローシファカは深い森の中でくらすサルで、季節によって大好物の果物を求めて何十kmも森づたいに移動していました。しかし、シファカのくらす森の大部分は人間によってこわされ、今では次の森へ向かうために、地上を走らなければならなくなったのです。もともと後ろ足は森の樹木をつかむために形を変えてきたので、地上を走るのには向いていません。不慣れな足でぴょんぴょんを飛び跳ねながら移動しますが、2歩から10歩ほど横っ飛びしただけでバテてしまいます。 |

A wild
elephant living in the primeval foreset of Borneo. IN this area, native forests
are being replaced by oil palm plantations. The elephants are walking in search
of food to find a few remaining primeval forests.
ボルネオの原生林でくらす野生ゾウ。この地域では原生林が次々とアブラヤシのプランテーションに換えられています。ゾウは食べ物を求めて、わずかに残った原生林を探し歩いているのです。 |

In the
area where Silver Lea-Monkey lives, the production of natural rubber has
historically flourished. The forest has been destroyed to expand the rubber
plantation.
